Welcome to Geographic Information Systems (GIS), a course in the
Department of Geography at DePaul University. This is the second in a
three-course sequence in GIS, more specifically the technologies that have evolved over the past 30 years as a consequence of the
introduction of computers into the processing of spatial datasets. The GIS Collaboratory on the Lincoln Park Campus (224
SAC) provides an ideal site for advancing your understandings of advanced spatial technologies such as
Global Positioning Systems (GPS), remote sensing, and z-surface
modeling. The focus will be on increasing your competence in the encoding, manipulation,
analysis, and output of geographically referenced data. This term we will explore GIS
through lectures, hands-on lab activities, and a final project. Key characteristics
of the course are:
Emphasis on applied GIS
Interdisciplinary context
Technology as an integral part of course
Active learning methods
