Option1: Economic development

 

Pick one country among the world regions (chapter 10 - chapter 14). Describe and explain its economic growth (or lack thereof) over the last three or so decades. As a result of your research, what can you conclude about major factors that contribute to its economic change (whether it is a success story or not)? (eg. economic policy, political dynamics, cultural trait, geographic factor, and so on)       

 

Option2: Geopolitical tension

 

Write an essay so as to answer one of the following questions.

 

Chapter 10. Central Asia

Engage in library research to learn more about the Taliban and its former regime in Afghanistan. How did this group come to power? What were their policies? How did they lose power? How is Afghanistan different today?

 

Chapter 11. East Asia

Engage in library research to learn more about one of the political movements. Tibet¡¯s bid for independence, and the Tiananmen Square uprising and its aftermath. Search the internet for web sites associated with some of these political movements. What are the goals of the movement you chose? What strategies have the members of the movement employed to achieve their goals? How successful have they been?

 

Chapter 12. South Asia

Learn more about the nuclear rivalry between India and Pakistan. What is the basis of the conflict and how did it arise? How did each country come to acquire nuclear weapons? What is the status of the conflict? What are the potential outcomes of this conflict? What are the chances of peaceful resolution?

 

Chapter 13. Southeast Asia

East Timor is the newest state in Southeast Asia, having achieved its independence in 2002. Learn more about East Timor¡¯s successful struggle for independence. Who are the indigenous people in East Timor? Which country or countries colonized it? What strategies helped the people of East Timor gain their independence? What are its prospects for long-term success?

 

Chapter 14. Australia and Oceania

Compare and contrast the position of Aborigines and Maoris in Australia and New Zealand with the position of African and Native Americans in the United States. How are their positions similar? What differences can you see?
